EMV Retreat
October 28, 2014
We are proud that several Honors College students were accepted into the 24th annual Emily Mauzy Vogel (EMV) Sophomore Leadership Development Retreat. This retreat is an intensive overnight program involving team building, leadership inventories, personal development, and will introduce participants to concepts surrounding strengths-based approaches to inclusive leadership. In addition to the retreat, participants can also join the EMV Experience, a year-long experience based around continued exploration of inclusive leadership. This culminates in a case study competition, with a scholarship prize.
According to the Dean of Students Office, the EMV is an overnight conference held at Camp Tecumseh for sophomore student leaders. Topics include appreciating diversity, networking for leadership, running meetings, leadership styles, and etiquette. Faculty, staff, and student organization leaders nominate students who show leadership potential. About 220 students are chosen from more than 900 applications. This program is made possible by a generous gift from the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mauzy, Purdue alumni.
Participant and Honors student Delaney Garrett, who was nominated for the retreat by both her RA and by Mike Loeffelman, the assistant director of the CLA Honors Program, had this to say about the retreat.
Most of the activities at the retreat focus on leadership development and diversity... The retreat allows participants to explore their own leadership styles, personalities, and identities while learning to recognize and appreciate those qualities in others. The retreat also provides a great opportunity for students to network with other up-and-coming leaders on campus. You’re able to meet people who lead in completely different ways, and you realize that we all have traits that can both help and hinder our success as leaders.
She also described her favorite memories of her time at the EMV retreat. "For the past two years at camp I have spent my free time canoeing. In the midst of all of the learning that takes place at EMV, it’s refreshing to be able to spend time with the people in your group in a more low-key environment." We are proud of each and every one of our students who had the ability to serve as mentors or participate in this special leadership retreat.
